 Parenting an Online Generation

Times have changed and things are being done differently. The global pandemic has revolutionized lifestyles in general and affected characters in particular. Much of the actions we did manually are being computerized and the online world evolving. Businesses, schools, and even places of worship have been shut down and took to online outreach. Parents are in the rush to provide their kids with the necessary computing gadgets to help them cope with the current situations. Academics in most parts of the world are being conducted online creating a wide range of information that is being disseminated wholly. These effects caused by the Coronavirus pandemic have seen much improvisation that never featured in the past times.

In the old days, parents had their kids by their watch and were able to regulate their exposure to various behavioral actions. Modeling of children was easier since they spent most time either in school or back at home where parents’ vigilance sparred. Back in the days during our upbringing, discipline was first hand as parents were keen and spent time with their children doing home chores and other disciplines. Now that the world has shifted to online presence, which may be called a digital world, parents have less control over what their kids are doing over the internet.

The digital world is full of any content you can ever imagine; ranging from academic learning materials to solicit information and situations. the vastness of the online world cannot be fully estimated as it keeps growing each and every day.

For instance, a parent with a kid who has exposure to computers and connection to the internet may feel contented that her son or daughter will adapt well and be subservient while learning online. However, the unbearable reality dawns when the parent realizes that the information exposed to the kid may not be metered. Like all young generations, cunningness is a character trait that is always vigilant in all. They behave holly when in the presence of their parents to gain their trust and freedom in general.

If you are a parent in these times in history, what are you doing or scheduling to do to adapt to the new online generation parenting?

Parenting is a real deal but it doesn’t have to be a big deal. In ancient times, humanity used their creativity to make their life comfortable. They used stone tools in the famous stone age according to history on the evolution of mankind. In the same manner, parents in the present generation have the same ability to deal with the parenting problem.

Significant tips to parenting in the new era of the online generation.

  • 1.       Set a good example. Kids emulate what their role models do in daily life. Young kids for example tend to mimic the character traits of their parents while alone or playing with other kids. Remember that you are modeling a person that you will leave for the future generation.
  • 2.       Try realism. Most parents tend to cover issues that sound inappropriate or avail solicit exposure to their children. The reality is that kids tend to be curious about them and in the long run, they end up experimenting to get the real taste. However, if parents discussed the matters openly and listed the consequences adequately, they would instill a firm understanding and model responsible generation.
  • 3.       Limit the exposure time on the internet.

  • The more time children spend online, the higher the tendency of diverging from the intended course. Online learning and researching should be the first priority compared to watching films or playing games. A time limit should be set and then schedule other home chores like doing laundry and cooking to make their kids all-rounded and responsible citizens.
  • 4.       Filter the content disbursed online. YouTube is a valuable platform for learning any kind of niche anyone can desire. However, it can also be a great pitfall and a bottomless pit of filthy materials. Luckily enough, the platform has a feature to filter what is available in the search box. Parents can use this feature to control what their kids watch or what is available when searched.
  • 5.       Appreciate the new era. Everything has its pros and cons and the online generation is not an exception. Apart from the adult content that may dismantle the young brain, the internet poses a wide range of information. Tips, methods, and means of navigating about anything converge on the internet. Offering advice and trying to identify their children's interests, parents can help shape their children's destiny.
  • 6.       Create a conducive environment.

  • Lastly, children are always agile and active at every inch of provocation. Imagine a kid with no access to the internet or any computing gadget, she or he may be persuaded to look for one. The kid may join other kids at their homes or in cyber cafes where there may not be any parental vigilance.

Coping with the new generation demands more resilience and updates with the digital world.

A point to note: Parenting is like crafting – the sculptor just need more skills and creativity to sculpt a magnificent sculpture.

Have irredeemable parenting.
